Mt. Biking: Ipswich area Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 12kts Surf / Sea State: n/a Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: n/a Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 31.8 mph (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 29.77 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Covid has forced windsurfers off the water so its biking activities for me
as my fitness was drifting with gym closed.
Have done a few rides now. Bought a mates roadie hybrid that was the bees
knees, superlight ally, but it was very uncomfortable compared to my MTB.
Even changing saddle and handle bar didn’t help. Getting the geometry
setup in the shop, didn't ease the knee pain. Shop said frame was wrong for
my weight and limb length so it had to go. Shame really as it was quick
with the very narrow bone hard wheel. I felt every bump in my wrist! If I
bought a drops I would def go to a specialist to set me up with a decent
frame, sizing etc.
So back on my MTB a nice Claude Butler frame with adjustable Rock shoxs,
which def smooth the ride, especially with the comfort Selle seat. I must
have been lucky as I bought it used but shop said spot on setup. Switched
handle bar to the unusually Jones bar (USA original).
If anyone out there is thinking about one, it’s superb, don’t hesitate.
There is probably 6 or more comfortable hand positions, so when driving am
laid out on the front bar (like drops), then move in to middle grip when
cruising (again like drops), then out on the curved normal grips to drop
the shoulders. On dirt I love that position especially for manoeuvres.
Jones bar def makes long non sop rides comfy. My tyres are hybrids so
tarmac is OK but not as quick as slicks - but great for gravel as I
normally do a 2/4 on dirt.
Good ride today 30 miles - average speed 10.63 mph with good driving at the
mid sections running HR into cardio zones from fatburn. 20mls was average
11.4. The ride was 50/50 cardio fatburn. I did pay the price though at the
25 ml mark, when I noticeably lost leg torque. Luckily I hit a downhill bit
so I could cruise in a nice low position free riding. Tagged a couple of
drops 2/3 mls again cruising at 15mph, but both said adious on level road
pumping up to 22 mph!
Covid is bad but clearing the road of cars is just brilliant. Country lanes
are definitely dangerous cos lunatics drive so crazy. I have lights
blinking, flouro yellow jersey and still their wing mirror almost most clip
FFs. Now it’s pure bliss that they have been kept off the road!!
As am mainly doing tarmac I have locked the shoxs to hard, but for some
reason it vibrates to soft - so got to sort that tomoz. Wish the blinking
wind would stop blowing! Def a pain on a bike when you are headed :)
Did 20 miles yesterday and 8 the day before so will kick back Sunday with a
couple of cool beers hopefully. Chilled avoiding the Covhead!
